The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
