Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
